So I guess this is kind of my first review. Woot woot.
In the vine-twisted swamps of Louisiana, the shadows have teeth.
Jack Winter has spent his entire life running from something no one else can see. His childhood is his darkest secret, but after a near fatal accident along a deserted road, the darkness he was sure he’d escaped rears its ugly head… and smiles.
But this time, he isn’t the only one who sees the soulless eyes of his past. This time, his six-year-old daughter Charlie leans into his ear and whispers: "Daddy, I saw it too."
And then she begins to change.Faced with reliving the nightmares of his childhood, Jack watches his daughter spiral into the shadows that had nearly consumed him twenty years before. But Charlie isn’t the only one who’s changing. Jack never outran the darkness. It’s been with him all along. And it’s hungrier than ever. (From Amazon)
I would just like to first say that I found out about this book from Ahlborn herself, I followed her on Twitter before I even considered reading the book and after seeing her post about it multiple times it piqued my interest. I just so happened to notice her tweet that you could get the book for free for a few more hours, and I jumped at the chance. Let me say, I do not regret that decision whatsoever. This book has quickly become one of my favorites.
Ahlborn had me hooked right away. I was interested at every point of the book. At some points I got confused when there were flashbacks, but that's just me. Otherwise, I thought that the flashbacks were a very important part of the story because it gave you a glimpse at Jack's past (which we don't really hear about aside from the flashbacks) which adds to the creepiness.
I find it interesting that my favorite characters were the evil ones. I felt that in the beginning Aimee was super annoying and overbearing, but later on I grew to like her as a character. Walking into this story I had no clue what it was about, so I think that really fostered part of my love for the story. What I mean by that is that walking in I had no preconceived notions, thus letting me fully develop my opinion.
I think that this book is definitely a wonderfully creepy and sinister horror story. Ahlborn's writing makes you feel like you are both there with Jack experiencing it all (even though the point of view changes quite often) and also that she has experienced it herself. If you like dark novels I definitely suggest this one for you. It had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't put it down (literally, I would sit in class and read the book until I went to the next class haha).
I definitely think Ahlborn will be someone to look out for in the future. Plus, doesn't her name just sound perfect for a horror author? I think so.
I give this book 4 and a half stars it is definitely a favorite and will have you thinking about it for days and checking your bedroom and constantly looking over your shoulders.

Bonholo~
Well hello there. This is my blog, Lauryn's Literary Loves. As you can see, my name is Lauryn and I love books. The past year I have not read nearly as much as I should have. I love books and this blog is a way for me to keep committed. I have set a goal on Goodreads to read 75 books this year. Hopefully I read way more than that, but I;m starting off easy.
I think I might review books on here, which makes sense. Rant about book stuff. Normal things :)
Welcome to the madness that is my world :)
